Richard's Diary....................Barrow Heath Shooting Ground

Happy 1st Anniversary to Phil Moss & Barrow Heath Shooting Ground.

Well known to many in the shooting world, I first met Phil at the Essex Masters this year and when he invited me to visit him at the ground he now runs in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, I thought it was a great opportunity to get to know Phil more and see first-hand the hard work he has been putting into Barrow Heath since taking over the ground last November.

The ground had been operating for approximately 20 years when it came up for sale in 2012 and Phil secured the lease and took over on the 23rd November 2012 and put on his first Registered shoot on the 25th November so straight in at the deep end!

Phil has been shooting and running shoots for many years particularly in Essex where he served on the CPSA County Committee for approximately 8 years and as County Chairman for about 4-5 years. He previously shot for the Essex County Sporting Team and this year made the Suffolk FITASC team so many congratulations on that achievement.

The past year has been non-stop at Barrow Heath which occupies about 20 acres with the entrance driveway being re-laid, new, easy to read signage, a redecorated and carpeted Clubhouse, toilet block, a new Sportrap layout and an increased English Sporting layout with 12 stands instead of 10. In fact Phil has almost doubled the number of traps at the ground from 23 to 45 enabling him to alter his Sporting layout every shoot.

The ground is registered for both English Sporting & FITASC and holds registered Sporting competitions on the 1st & 3rd Sunday of each month along with a Pool Shoot on the Sportrap layout and Phil tells me he is getting close to 150 shooters at each fixture which he is delighted about. Many congratulations to him on his first anniversary in charge of the ground and I know he has got lots of plans to improve the shoot further and grow the business and we wish him every success.
