Next stop on my tour of Clubs round the country saw me land
at West Kent Shooting School situated in the heart of Kentish Oast House
countryside near Tonbridge on Thursday 15th March.
The day started out with a blanket of fog but by the time I
arrived it had burnt off, the sun was shining and the sky was a perfect blue so
hopefully a sign of good things to come…
I was met by Gillian Lynch who runs WKSS with her husband
Michael and tea in hand we sat down for a chat about her ground and the many
excellent initiatives they run to promote our sport to newcomers.
WKSS is a Premier Plus shooting ground with a membership base of approximately 140 who operate Monday to Friday every week from 10am to 5pm. They offer an extensive sporting layout with a huge variety of targets and a rather sinister looking High Tower which throws targets in all directions. They also offer an English Skeet layout and a Helice layout along with a very nice clubhouse with kitchen (apparently Gillian is the Chef aswell) and retail shop providing all your clothing and accessory needs.
Every year the Club runs a number of have-a-go events to promote our sport with Young Shots days during the school holidays and numerous discounted lessons offers for example children under 16 get a 25% discount throughout the year and during National Shooting Week (2nd -10th June) they are offering 50% of all lessons from the 6th-8th June so if you know someone who would like to try their hand at clay shooting I would strongly suggest you give WKSS a call.
After lunch I decided to try out some of their sporting targets and in particular the ominous High Tower and armed with my Claymate digital counter which enables me to shoot solo with a delayed launch, I set off to give it my best shot…!!
Well with nobody trapping or scoring for me, I reckon I had a pretty good score out of 50 with just a few surviving for another day…..but with no one watching I would say that wouldn’t I!!
Lastly, I would like to thank Gillian for her time and hospitality during my visit and would recommend you put WKSS on your calendar as a ground to visit asap.
Look out for news of my next stop soon.
